The Euro 6 Emission Standard

You probably have heard people talking about Euro Emission Standards. They were introduced in 1992 and imposed on new cars, to improve air quality. In order for manufacturers to sell their vehicles in Europe, they must comply with those emission standards. Euro 6 wasn’t introduced until September 2014. All new diesel passenger cars are equipped with nitrogen oxide (NOx) after-treatment systems. The most favorite by car manufacturers is the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction). This system works with AdBlue® – a product based on urea and demineralized water.

What is AdBlue® – The Definition

AdBlue® is a diesel exhaust fluid for modern diesel engines equipped with SCR. This eco additive is used to limit emissions from cars, trucks, buses, excavators, tractors, and boats. It is made out of 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% demineralized water. Synthetic ammonia and carbon dioxide are being heated up to produce high-purity urea. The urea is then added to the demineralized water to create AdBlue®.

How does AdBlue® work?

All SCR systems are using diesel exhaust fluids (DEF) such as AdBlue®. Those fluids are stored in a separate auxiliary tank. The SCR injects AdBlue® directly into the exhaust stream. When exposed to hot exhaust gases, urea breaks down into ammonia and reacts with nitrous oxides from the combusted diesel – producing non-dangerous, naturally occurring nitrogen and water. Due to its outstanding purity, AdBlue® neither damages the SCR system nor reduces its lifespan. The selective catalytic reduction systems are being used as a sustainable and effective way of protecting the environment.

AdBlue® will help your business to reduce harmful emissions and it will reduce your fuel costs by up to seven percent. The product can be stored for 18 months, with a low freezing point of -11°C. It can be used in most weather conditions. AdBlue® meets the requirements of the ISO 22241 standard.

When to top up with AdBlue®?

Top up with AdBlue® when an indicator lights up on your dashboard. You have 2,400 km left to top up with the additive. The indicator might vary in depends on your vehicle, so refer to your manufacturer’s user manual to recognize and locate it on the dashboard. Depending on the vehicle model, there are three possible locations for the AdBlue® tank – next to the fuel filler, under the front hood, and in the trunk.
